About the United World Colleges (UWC) Scholarships for Malawian Residents

United World College(UWC) is an educational organisation which selects students from 150 countries. It is an educational organization with shorter educational programmes and has national committees in more than 150 countries. The UWC organisation has 17 schools and colleges in Canada, India, Italy, Norway, Singapore, Swaziland, USA, UK, Germany, Armenia, Costa Rica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Thailand, China,( mainland and Hong Kong), the Netherlands and Japan.

UWC colleges offer the International Baccalaureate  (IB) Diploma. At UWC, students from all over the world live together and spend a lot of time engaging in community service. With an outstanding mission and values students are challenged intellectually, emotionally and ethically.

The UWC Malawi National Committee is accepting applications for five (5) scholarships available to Malawian residents who successfully completed the MSCE or the IGCSE in 2020 or 2021 (or whose exams were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic). The scholarships are for entry into the 2-year pre-university international Baccalaureate programme at UWC Costa Rica, UWC Atlantic in the United Kingdom, UWC East Africa in Tanzania and UWC USA in August 2022. Applications should be born between 2004 to 2006 and must be between the ages of 16 to 18 by August 2022.

How To Apply

Applications should include the following documents in PDF format:

  1. A cover letter (300-500 words). This letter should include your full name, gender, date and place of birth, telephone number and email address. In the letter, please describe your extracurricular and service activities, and explain why you want to attend a UWC school.
  2. A short essay (300-500 words) reflecting on the following topic: “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of convenience and comfort, but where he stands during challenge and controversy" - Martin Luther King Jr.
  3. Personal reference from the school principal or a school teacher well acquainted with the student;
  4. MSCE or IGCSE results. If these are not available due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, submit instead your latest term results and, if available, your predicted results.
  5. A scanned passport photo.
  6. A signed statement from your parents or legal guardians indicating that they support your application.

All applications should be emailed to [email protected]. Applications must be received by 5pm on Friday 4th February 2022. Incomplete and late submissions shall not be considered.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an online interview with the Malawi National Committee review panel.
