NCHE Accredits New Institutions and Programmes

In line with its mandate to regulate higher education institutions in Malawi, the NCHE made the following decisions:

Institution Decisions
DMI St. John the Baptist University The Council granted authorisation to DMI-St. John the Baptist University to collaborate with DMI - St. Eugene University of Zambia to offer the following eight (8) postgraduate programmes:
  1. Master of Social Work in Project Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation
  2. Master of Social Work in Community Development
  3. Master of Education in Education Administration
  4. Master of Science in Computer Sciences
  5. Master of Business Administration and International Business
  6. Master of Business Administration in Human Resource Management
  7. Master of Business Administration in Marketing and Entrepreneurship
  8. Master of Commerce in Accounting and Finance

University of Livingstonia
  1. The Council registered Master of Science in Global Sanitation that will be offered at the University of Livingstonia
  2. The council deferred registration of the following three (3) programmes:
    1. Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Agriculture
    2. Bachelor of Science in Rural and Agrarian Development Agriculture
    3. Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness and Entrepreneurship Agriculture
Mwimba College of Agriculture
  1. The Council registered Mwimba College of Agriculture (MWICA) as a higher education institution in Malawi
  2. Council also registered the Diploma in Agriculture programme to be offered at Mwimba College of Agriculture
African Bible College The Council accredited, with conditions, the following two (2) programmes offered at African Bible College:
  1. Bachelor of Science in Audiology
  2. Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication
Catholic University of Malawi The Council did not accredit the Bachelor of Laws (Hons) programme offered at the Catholic University of Malawi. However, the University was given 60 days within which to work on the recommendations and then the programme will be re-assessed.
Jubilee University
  1. The Council accredited, with conditions, Jubilee University (JU) as a higher education institution in Malawi
  2. The Council accredited, with conditions, the following six (6) programmes offered at Jubilee University:
    1. Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Finance
    2. Bachelor of Commerce in Business Administration
    3. Bachelor of Commerce in Human Resource Management
    4. Bachelor of Science in Public Sector Management
    5. Bachelor of Science in Public Accounting and Finance
    6. Bachelor of Science in Procurement and Supply Chain Management

University of Blantyre Synod (UBS)
  1. The Council accredited, with conditions, the University of Blantyre Synod (UBS) as a higher education institution in Malawi.
  2. The Council accredited, with conditions, the following three (3) programmes offered at the University of Blantyre Synod (UBS):
    1. Master of Arts in Theology
    2. Bachelor of Commerce in Business Management
    3. Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing
  3. The Council did not register the following (2) programmes of the University of Blantyre Synod
    1. Bachelor of Accountancy
    2. Bachelor of Arts in Theology


Further, following the delinking of the University of Malawi colleges on 4th May 2021, the Council wishes to inform the general public that:

  • Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHes), Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) and the University of Malawi (UNIMA) shall be deemed to be duly registered on 4th May 2021 because they have been established by Acts of Parliament.
  • The accreditation status of all programmes accredited before the delinking will not change and that the accreditation validity period remains the same.
  • The accreditation status of the institutions also remains the same. However, a verification exercise will be conducted following the establishment of the new governance structures, policies and staff complement. This will not be done to confirm that the new changes meet the Council's minimum standards before transfering the institutional accreditation status.

The Council urges all students and guardians to verify the registration and accreditation status of institution and programmes before enrolling.
